The GOAL Family Program is a free health education and coaching program for families with kids ages 7–17. It is an opportunity for families to come together and learn about healthy eating, physical activity, and effective strategies for changing health behaviors and habits. GOAL meets once per week, and each interactive session includes education, discussion, hands-on demonstrations and activities, and time for structured physical activity. Participating families will also have time to set personalized family health goals with staff members each week and earn rewards for their attendance and progress toward those goals!
GOAL is a family-based program, which means that at least one parent and one child are required to attend each session, but the more, the merrier! Please feel free to bring along any siblings, grandparents, or other family members who are interested in learning more. Child care will be available for any kids under 7.
GOAL uses the Smart Moves curriculum, which comes from a similar, evidence-based family program operated by the Yale School of Medicine called Bright Bodies. In the program, we’ll cover topics such as:
- Balanced eating
- Meal planning
- Grocery shopping
- Goal setting
- Setting yourself up for success
- Changing your environment
- Reward structures
- Positive self-talk and building self-esteem
- Family dynamics
- Physical activity education and habits
- Ways to make physical activity fun
- Including more movement into daily life
- A lot more!
Our next round of GOAL Family programs will begin in late February 2025. Please click on your county’s program flyer below for more information, upcoming program dates and locations, and how to get in touch with your local GOAL coordinator.
